The small town of Rotherham in South Yorkshire is a great place to explore ancient medieval structures that date back to the times of Robin Hood. Originally a Saxon market town, the riverside locale is home to a number of interesting chapels and abbeys. The Chapel of Our Lady of Rotherham is a unique sandstone bridge that spans the River Don and still stands in the same place it did when it was erected in 1483. Rent a holiday home in the town and take a day trip to Roche Abbey, just a short drive away. The abbey was founded in 1147, near a gently flowing stream at the northern edge of Sherwood Forest. Locals maintain that Robin Hood attended mass here in the abbey’s heyday. Although the structure was partially destroyed in 1538, remnants of the arresting Gothic pillars and walls remain. Rotherham is also a good destination for children as it has a wonderful science centre. The Magna Science Adventure Centre is full of fun exhibits for kids, all based on the elements of Earth, Air, Fire, Water and Power. There are daily pyrotechnic shows that demonstrate how steel is made, and a fun waterpark for cooling down on hot days.
