How Much to Tip in China and Japan
Tipping is highly unusual in that part of the world.
In Japan it is considered even insulting because Japanese staff believe providing the best service goes without saying and a tip for them will be equal to an offense. Taking money out of your pocket and handing it over to a staff member is considered a rude and impolite act.
The situation in China is not much different and tipping is not accepted as it is not part of the local traditions. Not only it is not accepted but it is also officially prohibited and restaurants have a strict “no tipping policy”. The only exceptions of the rule can be noticed in westernized areas such as Hong Kong and Macau.
