Holiday Rentals in Cyprus – Smart Shopping for Smart Travelers

Any time of the year is great for traveling if you know how to properly plan.  Currently one of the most popular destinations for travelers is Cyprus.  This small, Mediterranean island is packed full of fun and adventure for families and independent travelers alike.  There is no questioning just how exciting a trip to Cyprus could be, especially if you can have fun and save all at the same time.  Thousands of people and families have chosen to seek out holiday rentals in Cyprus for their stays.  Not only do they end up having the trip of a lifetime, but they are also able to put their budgets toward fun filled activities to make memories to last them forever.

A little bit of research and dedication can go a long way when finding the right holiday rentals in Cyprus.  Starting early is the most important part, to avoid any pesky nonsense throughout the purchasing part of the plan.  Look and see what areas best fit the needs for the trip you are planning, and gear your holiday rentals in Cyprus search toward that.  Whether you are looking to rent a condo in the middle of downtown, or a lazy yet luxurious home on the beach, there will be options available for all preferences.  Holiday rentals are not meant for the rich anymore, but for the average traveler as well; from small cottages to large estates, there will surely be something for you.

The Rage about Rentals

One of the first things many people start to rave about after they have chosen to partake in a holiday rental is the privacy.  Unlike a traditional hotel room for accommodation, holiday rentals in Cyprus will provide you with the utmost privacy and convenience.  You do not have to give up your daily routines of home while on vacation if you choose not to.  Holiday rentals have access to washers, dryers, kitchens, and everything else you have back throughout your daily life.  NO need to pack like a fiend and have no room to bring home gifts.  Now you can take what you need, no more or no less.   Along with this, you do not have to worry about waking those patrons in the rooms next to you when leaving a hotel room, especially if you are traveling with children.  Having your own holiday home rental will allow you to come and go as you please without disturbing others around you.  What more could you ask for?

You save money when renting.  Initially ones assumption of holiday rentals may be that they are expensive.  If you plan on staying for a lengthy period of time, generally over five days, you will see you can significantly save on both food and accommodation together when renting a home.  Holiday rentals in Cyprus are luxurious and affordable.  You can live like royalty while still saving a bundle!  Some families have saved as much as £600 by choosing to partake in holiday rentals in Croatia.  It is a substantial savings that can go toward fun filled activities or even as emergency money.

No need to leave Fido at home.  There are holiday rentals in Cyprus that are pet friendly.  For those pet lovers that cannot seem to leave your furry friends behind with family or friends, this is a fantastic option.  Travel with your pet at your leisure, take them on walks, and enjoy sharing the sights with your beloved animal.  Hotels are generally very strict with their pet regulations, but thousands of holiday rentals in Croatia are pet friendly and often encourage owners to bring their beloved animals!

All the Comforts of Home

Without a doubt choosing to find the right holiday rentals in Croatia will have you feel as if you have found a home away from home.  No need to give your everyday comforts up for the chance to see a new culture; choose a holiday rental in Croatia for optimal comfort while still maintaining that feeling of being on vacation.  Sit back, relax, sight see, and enjoy the local culture all at once.  There is no better way to do this than acquiring that perfect rental for you and your family or friends’ needs.

Peyia: Undiscovered Jewel in Cyprus

Peyia is a small town in Cyprus, situated on the coastal hills, at end of the Akamas Peninsula, some 14 km north of Paphos.

The name of Peyia is believed to come from the Latin word Baia (meaning Bay) and it probably the place has been named so because of its closeness to Coral Bay, which in ancient times was used as a natural safe harbour for Egyptian cargo vessels.

It was the Venetians (perhaps Venetian merchants and/ or sailors of the Venetian fleet) who first established the town during the Venetian domination of Cyprus (1489-1570).

At present, many British expats have chosen Peyia to be their home. The town offers to its visitors and guests  a great number of holiday villas and apartments for rent . In the centre of Peyia can be found a town hall, police station and several small shops, restaurants and banks. The church, the main life force  for the citizens of Peyia , also stands proudly in the centre of the town.  As part of the old traditions, local men can still be seen sitting in the Kafenes (traditional coffee shops) drinking their coffee. Tourists also seem to find pleasure in that activiity and can be seen sitting next to them and chatting together.

Because of its hillside location, many parts of the town offer panoramic views over Coral Bay and nearby Paphos. If you stand near the church and the surrounding areas, you can enjoy unobstructed sea views, see the Paphos lighthouse, the Sea Caves and the vibrant Coral Bay resort.

Local celebrations are must see events.  During Easter and Christmas, the whole centre of the town is lighted with fairy lights stretching all along the way from Coral Bay to the Church, completed with  appropriate seasonal decorations. The place feels magical! Twice a year, locals and tourists alike are invited to a BBQ and a night of celebration, where food and drinks are provided for free by the town.

A famous place in Peyia is the local spring or “vrisi”, which locals used as a main water source in the past. It was here that everyone met, particularly the young men of the village who would assemble to watch the young girls collecting water in their red clay jugs. A legend has it that drinking the Peyia spring water makes girls beautiful and several folklore songs were dedicated to the spring, some of which  are still sung today. The spring still stands today, in the centre of the town, and is a trendy place used for wedding ceremonies.

Main Tourist Attraction in Kiti, Cyprus

Kiti is a picturesque village on the island of Cyprus, located about 11 kilometres south-west of Larnaca,  at an altitude of 20 meters above sea level.

Thanks to the sufficient annual rainfall that the area receives, Kiti and its region boasts a fruitful cultivation of various vegetables, cereals, and some fruit-trees.

The name of the villages is derived from the ancient city-state of Kition that once flourished further to the north.

Kiti might be a small village but it is a modern spot with all the necessary amenities and comforts that its residents or visitors may need. It has kindergartens, primary and high schools, a police station, banks, supermarkets, restaurants, infirmaries, various clubs and organisations, a cultural society, and various sports clubs. Kiti is a must visit place during a holiday in Cyprus and it is also a preferred location to rent a Kiti holiday apartment or villa, just a short distance away from Laranca’s lively coastline.

One of the main attractions in the village is the unique church of “Panagia Aggeloktisti” which is under the protection of UNESCO. The name of the church means “built by angels”. The origin of this name has two different versions: according to the first the church was planned to be built in another place, but, after the foundations were laid, miraculously, they were moved to its present location and also the construction was advancing itself during the night. Because of this it was believed that angels built the church. The second version says that the Virgin Mary’s mosaic found in the church was so beautiful that it could not be made by human hands and so it was believed that this mosaic was made with the help of angels.

As a matter of fact, the church was built in several different periods: the dome was built around the 11th century; the apse is a part of a 5th century Basilica, while the west part is of a more recent origin.
During the 12th century, a small arch-covered chapel, dedicated to the Saints, Cosmas and Damianos, was added to the north side of the church. There are two layers of frescoes in the chapel with the latest layer, dating back to the 15th century. The oldest layer layer hasn’t been dated as it will mean removing the latest layer. The Latin chapel, with its impressive gothic style, was added to the south side of the church in the 14th century.

Many tourists and pilgrims, both domestic and foreign, arrive here daily to visit the church and marvel at its beauty, frescoes, and the famous mosaic of Virgin Mary.

Explore Tersefanou, Cyprus

The small rural village of Tersefanou has turned into a crucial tourist and property development point especially after it has been proposed as the site for Larnaca’s first 18-hole, PGA competition golf course. The village is only 10 minutes drive from Larnaca International Airport and 15 minutes from the centre of Larnaca. Tersefanou itself has a special character and unique atmosphere and offers superb sea and mountain views.

The centre of Tersefanou, though significantly improved in the last several years, still retains its traditional Cypriot ambience and laid back charm with old cafes, taverns and small grocery shops.

Tersefanou has an ideal location when it comes to exploring the surrounding towns and villages. As an alternative to hotels you can rent a Tersefanou holiday villa or apartment for you and your family and use it as base to visit number of attractions in Cyprus, almost all easily reachable from the village.

Troodos Mountains

Just an hour drive from Tersefanou, lies Troodos, the biggest mountain range of Cyprus, located in the middle of the island. Its highest peak is Mount Olympus rising at 1,952 metres. Here you can find many popular mountain resorts (which in winters offer good skiing opportunities), old Byzantine monasteries and churches. Nine churches and a monastery are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Ancient Kition

The Ancient city-state of Kition is located north west of Larnaca and among its attractions are some temples dating back to the thirteenth century B.C, including the Phoenician Temple of Astarte. Remains of tombs made from gold, ivory and bronze can also be explored.

Choirokoitia Neolithic Settlement

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this renowned site is a Neolithic settlement dating back to 7000 B.C. It is one of the best preserved pre-historic sites of the entire eastern Mediterranean region. The artefacts and remains found here are on display at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia.

Phinikoudes beach

The beach is one of the hotspots of Larnaca. Translated from Greek ‘Phinikoudes’ means small palm trees and in fact the place was named so because of the palm trees planted here in 1922. The beach and the area around is trendy and known for its cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels and mini markets. During high season the beach provides all necessary facilities such as lifeguards, sun beds, umbrellas, etc.

Salt Lake

This lake is one of Larnaca’s main attractions. It is home to almost eighty species of migratory birds including the beautiful flamingos. About 10,000 flamingos come here in January/ February. In summer months, the lake dries up leaving a solid crust of salt measuring up to 10cm deep. In the past, the salt extracted from the lake was used for commercial purposes, but now it is just a tourist attraction.

Enjoy a Holiday in Famagusta, Cyprus

Famagusta (also known as Magusa), situated in the northeast of Cyprus, was once a major holiday destination but the Turkish invasion of 1974 changed all of that. The boom of the tourist industry came to a sudden end and Famagusta today is a quiet holiday destination. Because of the lovely sandy beaches Famagusta and the surrounding areas were once called the Cyprus Riviera and were built up with luxury hotels: some beaches and hotels still remain closed since the 1974. However, there are efforts to bring to live Famagusta past glory and some beaches north of the town recently reopened and tourists started to come again to this beautiful area.

Some of the best beaches of Cyprus lie further north in the Karpas peninsula: this area has now a better infrastructure and draws lots of visitors with its magnificent landscape and charming villages.

In the past, Famagusta Bay and its inland parts were the most important areas of Cyprus, home to the mighty kingdom of Salamis and the Bronze Age city of Enkomi. Famagusta itself, established by the Venetians, was also a very important town and because of all the relics from its glorious past it is now an open-air museum.

It is impossible to reach Famagusta directly from the southern part of Cyprus. As an alternative, one has to pass the Green Line into the north (known as the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus) in Strovilia near Agios Nikolaos or to cross the border in Nicosia and then reach Famagusta by bus.

Most people prefer to visit Famagusta self-driving, whether in their own vehicle or a rental car. You can explore the town on foot as it is small; crossing into areas guarded by the Turkish army (these are all clearly signed) should be avoided. Taxis are also a good option for the independent travellers without a car. These are easily obtainable and inexpensive.

For longer stays, Famagusta offers several beachfront hotels as well as various Famagusta self-catering apartments for rent.

The town has lots of shops from clothing and gifts to home stores. Most of the shops can be found along Salamis Road. The Old Town (within the walls) offers many specialised gift shops selling handcrafted items or the famous Cypriot Lefkara lacework. As in the rest of the islands, there are plenty of supermarkets selling fresh vegetables and fruits. In the centre of the town, there are two supermarket chains offering wider selection of products.
