Local authorities in the village of Petit Wasmes in Belgium have rented Vincent Van Gogh’s former home and plan to turn it into a museum and guesthouse. Currently the house is not occupied and is extremely run down, with peeling paint and boarded up windows. The authorities want to renovate the property in an effort to collaborate with the neighbouring city of Mons, which will be the European Capital of Culture for 2015.

The municipality plans extensive renovations to restore the house to what it originally looked like when Van Gogh lived there. Van Gogh made the decision to be an artist while living in this property. Authorities hope that the restoration will help revive an important cultural attraction in the small village.
